The most frequent request we get going round the ward talking to people is "Why don't the Council collect plastics, cans and cardboard?" As landfill sites are used up and charges for the few sties left increase, we are all going to have to rethink our rubbish. Recycling rates in the district have improved but we are still a long way behind many places in Europe, some recycle more than twice what we do. There are problems due to muddled thinking by the Government, for example if we collect bulky plastic containers, which would reduce the amount of landfill used, we get no financial benefit - it all goes to County. Just another example of Labour's joined up government. Despite all the obstacles put in the way it is perfectly possible to improve our recycling dramatically, and now is a particularly good time to begin making the changes as the new refuse collection and recycling contract with Serco comes into force shortly. Make your feelings known. Don't write to us, we're convinced already! Write to the Leader of the Council, John Dean, it's he and his colleagues who need shifting. Better still JOIN US and make a REAL difference.
