Winning in Welwyn Hatfield

Councillors Hazel Laming, Tony Skottowe, Nigel Quinton and Malcolm Cowan.

Welcome to Welwyn-Hatfield Liberal Democrats!

Borough Council Election Results Overview

Liberal Democrats were celebrating taking 2 of the 3 seats in Peartree, the first time ever that Labour has not been the winning party there. Malcolm Cowan, (already a county councillor) and Louise Lotz, defeated longstanding Labour councillor Jacqui Russell and newcomer Dean Milliken. Frank Marsh, the third LibDem candidate, who lost in 2006 by just 6 votes, was once again unlucky, finishing just 10 votes short of Labour's Steve Roberts.

Tony Skottowe, who retained his seat, paid tribute to Nigel Quinton, who lost his seat in Handside. Cllr Skottowe described Nigel's contribution as "second to none". Further comments by Cllr Skottowe were published by the Welwyn Hatfield Times, and can be read at the following link:

The following Liberal Democrat Councillors were elected on May 1st:

  • Handside Ward: Tony Skottowe

Tue 6th May 2008

Hertfordshire is faced with around 83,000 new homes being built, if the government confirms the numbers in the draft East of England plan. Quotes of the Week

"Liberalism in Britain has lost a great champion, the Liberal Democrats, a great advocate and our public life, a great servant."

Lord Paddy Ashdown

In memory of Lord Richard Holme, who died on 5 May

"If the Tories want to claim that they are going to cut corporation tax, they have to come clean about how they are going to pay for it. Cutting the main rate of corporation tax to 25% will cost more than £5bn a year. If David Cameron is to have a hope of sounding credible he must state clearly where the money will come from. Otherwise this will be seen as yet another unfunded tax cut."
